Patriot act good or bad?

To me this does not make any type of sence at all. Okay warn the people, but the government seems to be helpless like they are just awaiting for it to happen. So after hearing about things like this in other countries how does a United States citizen fell about the Patriot act and how long it took to get passeed? and do you feel like it is helpful?
